The Club Lightning is ready. Last year John Atkins repaired all the controls and they seem to be working. This year he has buffed and polished the sides and bottom as well as filled as many nicks and missing gelcoat areas, repaired the cover and replaced the centerboard with his orginal stainless steel board. The sails, rudder, tiller, etc are stored in the sail locker. If you are interested in sailing and/or racing the boat, let John know, and we'll make arrangements to get you on the water. Phil skippered the boat to a 9th place finish in the Lightning Celebration of Spring Regatta last weekend! So whether you're new to the Lightning or yours is in for repair or on the way overseas, this is a way to keep sailing and possibly add another boat to the racing. Thank you John!

Race Day -- Sunday, May 6th -- Snipes
Tom Lee and Lynn Bluett were first out on the water, zipping between whitecaps generated by a cold-but-steady northerly of maybe 17 knots. Three more Snipes had just come out when (Oh no!) Tom and Lynn capsized. They did not lose their board, as we had initially feared, and Lynn hardly got wet, but rescue took a while.
The whitecaps faded and Charlie and his brave (but cold) crew, Brendan, hung in long enough to let a Snipe race start, then headed for shore. That left Phil and Adam Morse to match race against Norm Dahl and Dean Clayton. First the Morses led, then Dahl/Clayton, then the Morses, then the finish line with Dahl/Clayton ahead.
It sure was great to be back on the water!
Dock Work Day
Saturday, May 12th, around twenty men showed up to work on the docks. We raised the west dock approximately two feet in an all day effort. Thank you to all who came out to work.

We hope to see you at the Newport Yacht Club soon....
I bet not everyone knows that the current clubhouse was
not the original location for the NYC. In 1943 the club moved to the
old Bird and Worms hotel (its current location to this day). The club
had 36 Snipes in the fleet that year. Below is a peek at the old
clubhouse.
